I first came across Louise Maxwell when I blogged this beautiful Waterside Ibiza Wedding by Ana Lui Photography and I was delighted when Lisa agreed to answer some questions for Fly Away Bride. I’m happy to be sharing her thoughts on destination wedding hair and makeup with you…

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you offer?

Before moving to Ibiza over five years ago I had a successful career in London, working for private clients, as a session stylist and winning awards for my work. For weddings I offer a full hair and make-up bridal service and work with the best therapists/nail technicians should you want to have a little extra pampering.

Where are you based and what cities/countries are you available to for work in?

I’m based in Ibiza but I also work in Majorca, mainland Spain and the UK.

What advice would you give to brides on the lead up to their wedding so that their hair and skin are in top condition for their wedding day?

Keep it simple. Don’t overload the skin with products or drastically change your regime. Keep the skin cleansed and toned and moisturised. Avoid fake tan and sunbathing just before your wedding. Orange or red flaky skin is not a good look and can cause problems with your skin. I would recommend treating yourself by booking in for professional facials/body treatments to give an allover glow.
Look after hair in the same way, keeping it cleansed and conditioned, with good, suitable products. It really is worth buying salon products and a good hairdresser at home can advise you on the best ones for your hair. Of course a good haircut is the best advice I can give!

Do you have any advice for brides in relation to hair and make-up trials in advance of their wedding day?

It’s a great idea to have a trial so you and your stylist know how you do and more importantly don’t want to look! A trail also lets you meet your stylists which can really help you relax and feel confident on the day. Trials are best carried out close to the wedding so that they become part of the build up. I often find if they’re done too far in advance many brides change their minds from their original idea which can be unsettling for everyone.
It’s never too early to start collecting images that you like from magazines to create a storyboard of the look you want. If you’re wearing a vale or headpiece bring it with you to the trial as it will affect your hair and make-up.

What are the unique challenges when it comes to hair and makeup for a destination wedding and what advice would you give to overcome these challenges?

The biggest challenge is the heat. It can make hair frizz and make-up slide. It’s important to use the correct products. Most brides don’t get married in July and August… it’s just too hot!
My best advice is to have a make-up ‘first aid’ in your or your chief bridesmaids purse for retouching throughout the day. A little blush here and lip definition there can keep you picture perfect for hours! Ask your stylist for tips on which products to pack.

Can you tell us a bit more about the person behind the business, how did you come to work in the wedding industry?

It has been a natural progression. I moved to Ibiza 6 years ago and have worked with a variety of clients including production companies, events companies and wedding companies. I taught for L’Oreal in their academies in London/Europe/Asia and put shows on around the world. It’s a very small island, so it doesn’t take long for word to get around…

Have you got any exciting plans that you’d like to tell us about?

Firstly I’m launching Louise Maxwell Agency this summer. LMA will bring together the islands best health and beauty experts providing clients with a single place to book all their hair, make-up and wellbeing treatments. My associates have been carefully and personally selected so I know they will look after our clients to the same high standards that I work to.
I’ll be joining the Ibiza Rocks team again this summer where I get to run my fingers through the hair of some of the best British pop/rock artists! This summer could see the launch of an incredible Rock’n’roll venue for weddings… watch this space.
