Bright, beautiful and so much fun is how we’d describe the Irish wedding we have for you today. As you might know, we love to show off a good home-grown do! Debbie and Niall met in university in the city of Cork and got engaged on a romantic trip to the Christmas markets of Vienna last year. They married six months later on beautiful Bere Island off the coast of Cork, where Debbie spent her summers growing up. More details from the couple below on getting married on Bere Island, but first these wonderful images captured by Katie Kav.

THE WEDDING

We know each other since college (UCC) where we met through mutual friends. After a number of years apart our paths then crossed again in Dublin and three years later we got engaged on a romantic trip to the Christmas Markets in Vienna. We chose to get married on Bere Island in Co Cork as Debbie’s father is from the island and she spent her summers there growing up. We visit the island ourselves regularly and it was always going to be our location of choice. After the ceremony we went to the Kenmare Bay Hotel for our wedding reception. We went with a rustic theme because of the location- we wanted to keep flowers and decoration simple so as not to take away from the beautiful setting: lots of lace, hessian, twine and natural materials.

CHALLENGES

Well the main challenge was the distance and logistics of being based in Dublin and planning a wedding in West Cork, and also due to the unpredictable weather we were very much at the mercy of the elements for the ferry crossings. Thankfully it all came together on the day and the weather was fantastic. We didn’t use a wedding planner and did it all with the help of family and friends!

BEST DECISION & ADVICE

To have the wedding at home (as we were considering having it abroad) was the best decision. Debbie’s most memorable moment was when she first walked in the door of the church and a hush fell on the crowd and Danny our son who was just over two at the time shouted “MAMA!”. Niall’s most memorable moment was turning around and seeing Debbie walking up the aisle, after being tipped off about her arrival by Danny! Our advice to other couples would be to plan as much as you can as early as possible so that you are not panicked and can enjoy the lead up to the wedding and the day itself.
