The feel of an island wedding along with a great party atmosphere is what drew couple Bryn and John to the Greek island of Mykonos. The couple had lived in Greece for a number of years (along with many other different countries) and had visited the island several times so they knew it was exactly what they wanted. Add photographer extraordinaire Anna Roussos to the mix and you get the following wonderful wedding. More from Bryn on the details of their destination wedding below!
Meeting and Engagement
“We had been together for six years when we got married- in fact, our wedding was exactly on our six year anniversary: June 1, 2013! We first met at the international school ACS-Athens when we were in high school. We didn’t know each other well in high school, however we reconnected five years later in Boston. We did long distance for four years, travelling between Boston and Montreal. Eventually we moved together to the city of Providence when I started my Ph.D.
We got engaged one summer day as we were driving up from Boston to Maine, John took a little detour at Wells Beach in Maine and we walked along the beach and sat down at the end of a rock pier to discuss our plans on moving to Providence. John pulled out the ring and surprised me with the proposal. I said yes!”
Choosing a Destination Wedding
“We have friends and family from all over the world (Japan, Philippines, Canada, England, US, Lebanon, etc.) and it was easier for everyone to go to Greece than the US. We also both lived for several years in Greece and feel a special connection to that country, which we wanted to share with as many loved ones as possible. Regarding why we chose the island of Mykonos, we have been visiting it for the past couple of years and knew we wanted the feel of an island wedding and the party atmosphere Mykonos is known for.
When we began planning the wedding, we already had some locations in mind if we were going to have it in the US or elsewhere. In the end, because we visit Greece every summer, we decided that it was the place for us. Regarding setbacks- to be completely honest, there were no challenges related directly to the wedding. A lot of the little details took more planning than we might have anticipated, and there was rain on the actual wedding day that was not expected. Overall, we have so many generous and helpful friends, family and vendors that it all came together beautifully. We sent our invitations about 2 months before the event. However, almost all of our guests knew the details at least six months prior so that they could make travel plans. Having a destination wedding and hiring a wedding planner were our best decisions. It allowed for a great wedding, with very little stress of problems.”
The Wedding Day
“We really wanted the feel of a true Greek island wedding. This was achieved with having a traditional Greek Orthodox wedding, blue and white details, and an outdoor reception. We also booked an entire villa property complete with a pool and a beautiful view of the island. Several of our guests had never been to Greece before and had already made plans to visit other islands, as well as Athens. However, most stayed on Mykonos for four days because we had a several events before and after the wedding.
To pick a favorite moment is hard, because there were so many great moments. The most memorable is probably how many of our friends and family travelled from all over the world to celebrate the occasion with us. Given that we had a traditional Greece Orthodox ceremony, we followed all the traditions that comes with this including the crowning, walking around the altar three times, and exchanging of rings. Our advice for anyone planning a wedding would be to stay as true to their vision as possible. Although it was not always easy, we’re so happy we had the wedding we wanted.”
Well said we think! Thanks so much to Bryn for sharing this lovely wedding story and details, and to Anna Roussos who is one of our regulars here at Fly Away Bride.
