I spent a little bit of time in Brittany a number of years ago, mainly for a music festival and it has always stuck with me that it was one of those places I really felt at home in. It’s hard to explain because nothing was too similar (except maybe for the music!), I couldn’t even speak French but there is just a vibe there that made me relaxed and very comfortable. It’s really amazing. So when this beautiful French Island wedding in Brittany came through to us, I was so pleased. Even more so when after going through the images, as I got that same sense of familiarity with it! Again, hard to explain but there is something so chilled out, very homely about Alex and Josh’s wedding on Belle-Ile-en-Mer and it’s captured so wonderfully by Tegan McMartin Photography that I nearly feel like I was there, cheering Alex and Josh outside the church! Alex and Josh’s wedding was planned mainly from Canada and it was full of love and fun. They celebrated their ceremony in both English and French and featured a lot of celtic music, a very prominent tradition in this part of France.  Alex, originally from France, travelled ahead of Josh to put the final touches to their wedding day and what a day it was…

From Alex;

“Josh and I were married on September 1st, 2012. Everything just went so fast! He proposed underneath the Eiffel Tower while we were visiting my family, I had no idea that his intention was to come to my mother country to meet my family before asking the big question!”

“We decided to have our wedding in the west of France in Brittany where I am from – on a small, beautiful island called Belle-île-En-Mer. This was the perfect place for us, where sailors and boats are all around the island, where the Celtic spirit is felt constantly. Josh and I wanted our wedding to reflect who we are, we couldn’t be more happy with the result.

Our wedding was especially wonderful as people from around the world were able to come: Canada, Mexico, Germany, England and of course France. To travel to such a small island in the middle of nowhere in France created a magic experience for us all, with a strong positive energy and a host of unique memories. As Josh’s mother tongue is English and mine is French, we chose to have a ceremony in both languages, which was more work but very meaningful.”

“We were so lucky to have Tegan photograph our wedding- she came all the way from Vancouver, Canada for our special day. Tegan was really patient with what we wanted and did an amazing job! She really took her job seriously. A few months before our wedding she had already organized the schedule – on our wedding day it was so reassuring and relaxing to see her there. When we got her pictures, we were blown away!

A few last minutes changes were helpful, such as planning to have Chilean musicians playing guitar and singing at the cocktail hour. This wasn’t originally in our plan- we met them through a really good friend a week before the wedding at a party. They accepted to play for us on our wedding, which was a great success.”

“Another touch that made this day fabulous was a close friend surprising us with music. When we exited the church, he and his friend played Celtic bagpipes, which was unbelievable. It made our wedding more Celtic than we thought, and we were on the verge of tears during this moment while everyone threw rice at us.”

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Big congratulations to Alex and Josh and a special thanks to Tegan McMartin for sharing this lovely destination wedding in France with us today. We will leave you with some parting words of advice from Alex..

“You are the superstar of the day, so make sure you do everything to feel serene! In a few hours you are going to get married and have a very long day- make sure you plan a few days before who will take care of all the specifics. If there is something to set up before the ceremony, ask someone to do it for you, make a little schedule for those who will be willing to help you- your mom, your sister or brother, your cousin, your best friend, but NOT YOU! Relax, breathe, and make the most of it – Enjoy every minute!”
