Sarah and Josh, from Ohio in the US, tied the knot last year in an amazing Iceland destination wedding (stay tuned, we’ll be featuring it here soon!) One year later, they flew to Paris for an anniversary photo session with Pierre Atelier. On the morning they arranged for the session, a problem arose in that their meeting point with Pierre at the Louvre wasn’t specific enough (a crucial issue, given the size of the Louvre!) By the time Sarah and Josh finally met Pierre, they were almost an hour behind schedule. They ended up rushing around trying to get all the shots they wanted: at the Louvre, Palais Royal and along the Seine. Sarah is also a photographer and knew the importance of capturing moments in the ‘golden hour’ before dusk. The photos are a mix of digital and film, and one unexpected but pleasing result was that all the rushing around actually gave the images a great sense of energy! More from Sarah below, including her advice on having a photo session in Paris.

HOW THEY MET

“Crazy as it sounds, we actually grew up together! My family was a part of a larger group of families that met during the week for fellowship, dinner, and games, and one day his family came to join us. I think we were both around 8 years old. Following that night, both of our families connected and would get together on occasion because all the kids were similar ages (we both have a large handful of siblings). I (Sarah), pretty much always admired his character and personality over the years, and grew to have feelings for him as we got older. I didn’t catch his eye until we were around 17, but at soon as we had our first big conversation about it all…we knew the rest would be history. He told me right then and there that he couldn’t imagine a life without me in it, and as I already knew I liked him (a lot. like, a lot.), in that moment I knew I was looking at my future husband. We count that first conversation as the beginning of our relationship, even though we didn’t have an official first date till a year later.

THE ENGAGEMENT

It was August of 2013 I knew we would probably be engaged within the next six months or so because we had long talked about getting married during the spring/summer of 2014. What I didn’t know in August of 2013 was that he had already purchased a ring and had it in his possession for two weeks. Never did I think he could keep a secret like that without me suspecting anything! He had been planning an elaborate proposal, but one night, the timing was right and he proposed in the spur of the moment. And oh, it was perfection. We had been having long, deep, good conversation, and at one point, he grabbed my hand and led me to the walk-in closet (where he had hidden the ring, unbeknownst to me…I was so confused!). He told me to face the other way, and then a moment later, to turn back around…and there he was on his knee with the ring. It caught me 110% off guard, and I sobbed for a couple minutes before I could even say yes (he had to remind me that he was still kneeling there!). No words can describe the emotion I felt that night. It was so beautiful, personal, and perfect for us. I would never change a thing.

A DESTINATION ANNIVERSARY SESSION

This session by Pierre was for our first anniversary- we had eloped to Iceland the year before, and wanted images to commemorate our beautiful, exhilarating first year of marriage. We planned to vacation in Paris and Norway for our anniversary, and since Paris is the city of love, it made perfect sense to have a photo session done there :) We had the chance to get amazing images in a natural landscape from our engagement session and wedding, and so we wanted a little change of scenery for these photos. Pierre walked us through the streets of Paris for the evening, and we ended the session with a beautiful glowing sunset on a bridge over the Seine. It was perfect.

PARIS PHOTO SESSION ADVICE

Take your photographer’s advice on when the best time for photos is! Usually that’s in the early morning or in the evening just before sunset due to the light. For Paris, that timing especially makes sense, not only because of the light, but because of the amount of tourists there are during the day. If you want photos at any iconic location in Paris, make sure to get there before or after the crowds do!”
