“Never ending sun, blue sky, sea, delicious food, fresh fish, vino and tapas. Stunning nature and relaxation during the day and crazy nights out with dancing, singing and drinking.” This is how one resident describes the island of Ibiza. A pretty good recommendation we think. I’ve always wanted to go to this island and after getting this Ibiza destination wedding guide together, I want to go even more! It seems that Ibiza has something for everyone, from pretty, bustling beaches, to silent cliff tops; from yoga classes and peaceful retreats to burlesque dancing and vibrant clubs.
WEDDING CEREMONY TYPES
Below is a short introduction to what is and is not possible in Ibiza. For more complete details, see our Legal Guide to Marriage in Spain.
CATHOLIC WEDDINGS ✈ These are the only legally recognised religious ceremonies in Ibiza. One of you must be Catholic in order to be able to have a ceremony.
CHURCH BLESSING ✈ If you would like to be married in a church but do not wish to have a Catholic ceremony you can choose to have a Church blessing at the Anglican Church. Although you do receive a marriage certificate, this is not a legally recognised marriage so you will have to arrange a civil ceremony in your home country previously.
CIVIL CEREMONIES ✈ At the moment a two year residency is required for legal civil ceremony marriages. The tourism industry is currently lobbying to change this.
SYMBOLIC CEREMONIES ✈ Symbolic weddings can be celebrated in many stunning locations in Ibiza; villas, gardens, cliff tops, beaches etc. For beach and outdoor ceremonies permission is needed and beaches in the summer can get quite busy and noisy. The best option is to find a hidden cove, private villa, or cliff top- for example Es Vedrà island cliffs (above image). Symbolic ceremonies have no legal recognition so your paperwork will have to be arranged separately.
CHURCHES
Es Cubells Church ✈ Perched on a cliff, this church has spectacular views of the ocean and the island of Formentera.
Salinas Church ✈ Originally built for workers on the slat flats nearby, this little church is also close to the beautiful beach of Es Cavallet (above).
San José ✈ A beautiful interior draws couples to this church, which also has a pretty plaza often used for wedding photos.
San Carlos ✈ Located in the village of San Carlos, less than half an hour’s drive from Ibiza town, this is a country-style church that is quite popular with destination wedding couples.
Jesus Church ✈ Dating from the 16th century, a large beautiful painting adorns the main altar (below).
