Mike and I are thinking about spending some time abroad toward the end of this year and at the weekend we started putting together a list of where we would like to go. Italy was the first place on my list and this wedding is why! Nils and Leanne first met 5 years ago on a group snowboarding holiday in Iran. As both were living in Dubai at the time it seemed a logical place to go. Leanne is from the UK and Nils from New Zealand so the decision of where to get married was not such an easy one. As Nils was born in Italy, the idea of everyone travelling and making a holiday out of the wedding seemed like the best way to go – we touched on this sort of situation last Monday when we weighed up the pros and cons of a destination wedding. Photographer Andrea Tappo was the talent behind the lens for this wonderful destination wedding in Umbria.

The lovely Leanne gave us some insight into how they went about the planning process…

“We chose Umbria due to its scenery and specifically Castello di Montignano because of the intimacy it offered our special day as we had the venue to ourselves for 3-days to do what we liked, most importantly, no limitations on how long the party could carry on for! Castello di Montignano was also one of the few places around Italy that allowed us to have an outdoor civil ceremony. Once the location was chosen, the next big decision was our photographer. After looking online, Andrea Tappo was without doubt our first choice. His pictures captured just the mood we wanted from our photos: very complimentary in the colours and angles and captured certain moments that only a true professional would look for. Andrea was everywhere, but nowhere as he was not intrusive during the day, just what we wanted.”

“The wedding was full of very personal touches for our guests. A CD with a personalised cover, sweets and a letter was left in our guests rooms as a gift on their arrival. We used Polaroid pictures of some old and funny pictures of our  guest as our seating chart with their name and table name on each of them – it brought on a lot of smiles and was one of the main talking points during the day which was really nice and because we had guests from around the world that didn’t all know each other, it really served as an ice breaker! Unexpected but great! The whole wedding was everything we had hoped for, lots of laughter, fun and dancing and the party went on until nearly 5am, it was our perfect wedding!”

How much fun are those speech bubbles? A great little DIY project that won’t take up too much room in the suitcase! I have no idea where they found that bike though…

Castello di Montignano is a really beautiful venue and can hold weddings up to 250. They also have a pretty incredible  spa so we’d advise the bride and bridesmaids going a few days early to make sure everything is in order, obviously. Big thanks to Leanne and Nils for sharing their wedding day with us and of course, we wouldn’t have been able to do any of that without the brilliant Andrea Tappo, check out his website and blog for some more destination wedding goodness.
