We are flying to Portugal today and in particular, to small town called Vila Praia de Ancora near the beach in the North of Portugal. Our couple, Brian and Vera who have been together for 6 years, travelled all the way from NYC for their big day which was captured by the very talented Lounge Fotografia.

The boys are up first and remind us just why we love destination weddings.. there is something about the sun and being away that allows us all to chill out, relax and enjoy ourselves.

Vera and Brian met in August 2006 . “We were both out with friends when we met at an Irish Bar called Solas in the Lower East Side. We went on our first date the following week and have been together even since. Brian proposed while we were celebrating my birthday at my parents. He had dressed up our dog in a “Will you marry me T-shirt” .

Vera bought her gorgeous Pnina Tonai dress in Kleinfields in NYC. The striking fuchsia pink bridesmaid dresses, perfect for the beautiful Portuguese weather are by David Meister. We asked Vera why they chose to have their beautiful wedding in Portugal;

“Since Brian and I both have family in Europe we always knew it made sense to have the wedding in there. I always dreamed of getting married in Portugal and when Brian came to visit he fell in love as well. Portugal offered us an exciting way to celebrate our wedding as well as an opportunity to introduce our friends and family to the beautiful region.”

Planning a wedding can be as stressful as it is enjoyable and destination weddings are no exception. The biggest challenges most destination couples face is finding the right vendors, something Vera is quite familiar with. “It took so much time and effort. I had a friend who had married their a few years before so she gave me as much information as possible and then I made two trips to Portugal in the year before the wedding. Since wedding traditions are different between USA and Portugal I used pictures to show my vendors things that I liked and disliked. Being able to communicate via email was a big help.” Putting together an inspiration board to plan your destination wedding is a really great way to overcome any language barriers you might come up against. You might not know the Portugese word for “Peonies” but any florist will understand what you are looking for simply by showing them a picture. Good work Vera!

Brian and Vera’s wedding reception was held at Quinta do Cruzeiro.

Congratulations to our newlyweds for sharing their glorious day in Portugal with us and also to Luis at Lounge Fotografia. This isn’t Lounge Fotografias first feature on Fly Away Bride… do you remember that gorgeous Trash the Dress shoot from last year? We will sign off for today with some useful tips on planning a destination wedding from the beautiful bride. “Get organised. The sooner you can let your guest know the details the more likely they’ll be able to plan the trip. Get vendors who respond promptly so you’re not left wondering what’s going on. Lastly, people love destination weddings where they can sit back and enjoy themselves so don’t stress out too much over details. If it’s too hard to get the exact thing you want, just let it go and work with the local resources you have.”

    I’m so glad I found this. I’ve been searching for information on getting married in Ancora. My fiance’s family is from there and I have also been there and absolutely love it. I love Vera’s comments of thinking it would be a great way to introduce more friends and family to this hidden treasure. I just started planning and completely forgot about Quinta do Cruzeiro, its great to see photos. I have so many questions. How was the food? Where did your guests stay? How did you arrange transportation? If there is anyway I can communicate my questions to talk more, it would be a great relief.

    Thank you so much for posting.
