Imagine playing in the village where your grandmother grew up as a child, then returning years later to celebrate the biggest day of your life in the same village, which has been turned into a beautiful wedding venue! Federica did just that last summer when she married her fiancé Tiziano. Titignano village is a beautiful and unique wedding venue with a working church and accommodation for guests, along with a panoramic view overlooking Lake Corbara and vineyard fields, which you can see below. Federica and Tiziano are both Italian and live in London but decided to go back to Italy for their celebration where Lucy Davenport captured these gorgeous images. Lots more from Federica below on planning their big day!

Meeting and Engagement

“We are both Italian but come from two different regions. Tiziano from a small village in the countryside of Venice (north east Italy) and I’m  from Umbria (centre Italy) very close to Rome. We are both architects and studied in the same University in Venice. However we didn’t actually meet there! We had to wait till the end of 2007 in London where we were working for the same architectural practice. Some mutual friends introduced us and it was love at first sight. In the summer of 2011, Tiziano proposed in very sweet way during one our favorite times of the week: Saturday morning breakfast! We love this time of the week because it’s the beginning of the weekend and we know that we have two full days to plan and spend together. So it was the perfect occasion to start planning our future together.”

 Deciding on a Destination Wedding

“We both live and work in London but our families and a lot of our friends live in Italy, so we decided to go back to our origins and look for a place that would best represent us, our love and our traditions. It was quite funny that I knew Titignano village since I was a child because my grandmother grew up there. Every Easter, anniversaries and grandparents’ birthdays were celebrated there! When we started to look for a wedding location we didn’t immediately think of Titignano however and spent a few months visiting a lot of villages in Umbria. We were looking for a location that had a church and reception venue very close to each other. We also wanted a place that could host all our friends and families coming from other parts of Italy and abroad for a night or maybe even two. Titignano was just perfect because it’s very well connected with both Rome and Perugia airports and also very close to the wonderful cities of Orvieto and Todi. We reserved the entire village for two days to make sure that we had exclusive use for the weekend. It was such a great idea for all our friends and families to enjoy the stay, relax and not think about anything apart from being there. The location choice was the best decision we made.”

 Planning a Destination Wedding

“The big challenge was to plan the event from London. Our family members in Italy were great and very helpful so special thanks to them! We didn’t use a wedding planner. We managed to organise and plan everything by ourselves: we designed the venue layout (we are architects though!) and made our wedding invitations and stationery- we also have a passion for design. They were so successful that we started a wedding stationery business afterwards! We sent out our invitations about 4 months in advance, and our save the dates 4 months earlier. We wanted to give all our guests time to plan well in advance their trip and book holidays and flights. Most of our guests stayed the whole weekend of the wedding so it was a proper weekend break, they had time to relax and enjoy the location facilities and the beautiful swimming pool looking over the vineyard valley. Some of them chose to take advantage of the trip and travel around central Italy the following week.

Style and Decor

“Since our setting was the Umbrian countryside we choose a “country chic” style with colorful scented flowers like roses, lavender, daises and rosemary. We used olive trees to decorate the square and the church during the celebration. The olive trees contributed greatly to the unique scenario and atmosphere as they belong to that region which produces amazing olive oil. We placed grape-crates around the square to be used as seats, these elements had a strong connection with the village also because in Titignano there is a farm which produces amazing wines and liquors.

All the stationery was designed and created by ourselves using laser-cut technology. We went for a chic and delicate set and believe it greatly added to the individual style of the decor, from the pastel butterfly escort cards to the invitations, the order of service, place cards and menus. When we sent our invitations we gave our guest a little taste of the celebration to come. The skyline we designed showed London, where we met, and Titignano where we were going to be joined as husband and wife.”

The Wedding Day

“We decided to have a live music band which was a crucial addition to the party atmosphere after the reception and everyone really enjoyed this. For both of us, the ceremony was the most emotional moment of the wedding. We had already been living together before getting married. After the wedding, friends asked us what had changed in our daily life thinking that nothing would have, but actually everything has because we feel responsible to each other now in every decision we make.

We have no regrets at all about they way the day went. If we had advice, it would be to use a wedding planner. Organising a wedding is fun but also very complicated, especially if you’re not living in the country. Hiring a planner would have made the process easier for us in the months and weeks leading up to the wedding.”

Thanks so much to Federica for sharing their her and Tiziano’s wedding story with us, and to Lucy Davenport for these beautiful images. How amazing to have a whole village for your wedding- and in Italy? Perfection.

So beautiful! I thought that might be a Rosa Clara wedding gown when I saw that first image and it is! So lovely to see it on this beautiful bride and in such a perfect setting! I also think the bride makes a great point about sending out save the dates and invites much earlier for a destination wedding to allow guests plenty of time to plan. Breathtaking wedding – thanks for the trip to Italy today!
